Canadian TV
Canadian news channels, explained
The 24-hour news and business channels available in Canada, in both official languages, and how to watch them live.
Canada has a well-developed 24-hour news layer across both official languages, plus business, parliamentary and strong local news.
The categories
| Type | What it covers |
|---|---|
| National 24-hour news (English) | Rolling domestic and world news from the public broadcaster and the main private news channels |
| National 24-hour news (French) | Equivalent rolling news services for francophone audiences |
| Business news | Markets, economy and corporate coverage during trading hours |
| Parliamentary | Gavel-to-gavel proceedings of the House of Commons and committees, in both languages |
| Local news | The main networks' owned-and-affiliated stations produce supper-hour and late local newscasts in most markets |
| International news in Canada | Global news channels (UK, US, Qatar, France and others) are carried on many packages and via IPTV's international line-up |
How to watch live
- Over the air / basic cable: the local stations carry national and local newscasts free or on the cheapest tier.
- News-channel apps and websites: the national news broadcasters stream their 24-hour channels online, sometimes free, sometimes behind a TV-subscription login.
- Free ad-supported streaming: some news services run free live channels on smart-TV platforms.
- IPTV: carries the Canadian 24-hour news channels alongside international news networks in one guide. See the IPTV channel line-up.
A note on news sources
For breaking news, live TV is only one input. The national broadcasters also run free websites and apps with live blogs and clips, and the parliamentary channel's proceedings are archived online. If your interest is mainly news, you may not need a large TV package at all.
