French-language television in Canada

How francophone broadcasting works in Canada — the main Québec networks, public and private, plus specialty channels and the streaming landscape.

French-language television in Canada is centred on Québec but serves francophone communities nationwide. It has its own networks, its own specialty tier and its own streaming services — it is not just dubbed English TV.

The main networks

TypeRole
Public broadcaster (French service)National French-language public network with regional stations across Québec and in francophone communities elsewhere
Private national French networksAdvertiser-funded networks with strong Québec-produced drama, variety and reality programming
Provincial educational (Québec)A publicly owned educational and cultural broadcaster
French specialty channelsNews, sport, movies, lifestyle, youth and music — a full specialty tier in French
TV5International francophone network carrying programming from France, Belgium, Switzerland and Africa

Francophone TV outside Québec

Francophone minority communities in New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba and elsewhere are served by the public broadcaster's French service and, in some provinces, dedicated community or educational channels. Cable and satellite providers across the country are generally required to offer a French-language service tier.

Streaming

  • The French public and private broadcasters run their own streaming apps, with a mix of free and subscription content, and live channels behind a TV-provider login.
  • Québec has home-grown subscription streaming services with large French-language film and series catalogues.
  • IPTV carries the Québec networks and international francophone channels together — see French-language IPTV. A fully French version of this site is planned.

Language and accessibility

Many Québec channels offer French and English audio tracks and French subtitles on selected programming. On IPTV, where a broadcaster provides multiple tracks, you can switch audio and subtitles from the player — useful in bilingual households.
